Art Fact Friday #6 September 1st 2023 Lorna Simpson

Lorna Simpson, photographer born August 13, 1960, Brooklyn, NY is a pioneer of conceptual photography, her work explores stereotypes of race and gender, emphasizing Black women. She attended the High School of Art and Design in NYC. She studied painting switching to photography receiving a B.F.A. 1982 from the New York School of Visual Arts. Simpson received the National Endowment for the Arts fellowship 1985.

Simpson visited Europe and Africa, developing her photography skill and started expanding beyond the limitations of the photographs. She earned an M.F.A.1985 at USC, SD. Her signature style: photo-text, includes text superimposed on photographs introducing new meaning for images. You're Fine, You're Hired 1988, Uses wood prints of an African American woman and list terms and list terms for a physical exam


By the late 1980s she began solo exhibitions. She is the first African American woman to exhibit at the Venice Biennale, 1993. Simpson pushes to avoid what she calls a paralysis caused by outside expectations turning her attention to video.

She received the Whitney Museum American Art Award 2001.Corridor (2003), the story of a runaway slave and a bored 20th-century housewife showing commonalities of isolation. In 2007 her work was featured in a 20-year retrospective at the Whitney Museum of Art, NYC.


In 2013, Simpson became the artist-in-residence at the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, MA.Three Figures,2014,showcased photos altered by ink and acrylic. A different direction opened at Venice Biennale, 2015. After she, exhibited sculptures and a series of collages titled Unanswerable,2018 in her galleries. Seen as depictions of Black women the collages combined photos from nostalgic magazines. She was awarded the J. Paul Getty Medal, 2019. Lorna Simpson is represented by Hauser & Wirth.
