Sonya Clark fiber artist recognized for using a variety of materials including combs, coins, seed beads, thin threads, and strands of human hair to address race, culture, class, and history; Representing notable African American figures, like Madam C.J. Walker and President Obama and modern craftspeople;hairdressers.
Born 1967 in Washington D.C. Clark holds a BFA from the Art Institute, Chicago and a BA in psychology, Amherst College, later awarded honorary doctorate, 2015. Clark holds an MFA, Cranbrook Academy of Art, Distinguished Alumni Award in 2011.Also, exhibiting in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Americas in 450+ museums and galleries.
In the 1990s, her work was acclaimed, evoking African traditions moving everyday forms to personal and political ideals . Her work elevated assemblage and accumulation. Kente Flag Project, 1995 combines African and Western/American items.
In 2008 Loose Strands, Tight Knots, exhibited at Walters Art Museum. Since 2009, shes created serial Flag projects like the Confederate Battle Flag. She performed Unraveling 2015 at Mixed Greens gallery NYC and the Nasher Museum at Duke,2016.
From 2006-17 she worked as Distinguished Research Fellow at the School of the Arts and Professor and chair of the Craft/Material Studies Department, Virginia Commonwealth University. Also named Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship 2010 & 11.She won ArtPrize Juried Grand Prize 2014. She received the Anonymous Was A Woman Award 2016. In 2016, she was awarded a university-wide VCU Distinguished Scholars Award. In 2017 Monumental Cloth (sutured) a hand woven cloth reproduction of the towel used by Confederates to surrender April 9, 1865. Unravelling and Monumental Cloth (sutured)were exhibited at Mead Art Museum, 2018. In 2020, Clark was named the American Craft Council College of Fellow. Currently Clark is Professor of Art at Amherst College in Amherst, MA.
