Renee Cox A controversial African-American visual artist, working foremost in photography and video; using her body, nude and clothed in highlighting womanhood and criticizing society. Cox’s work highlights social issues using religious imagery.
Born October 16, 1960, Colgate, Jamaica, Cox began her photography career, at Condé Nast, the music and film industries. Cox studied film in undergrad at Syracuse University. She received an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in 1992.
Shall be Named 1994, a distorted body made photographs hangs from a cross, resembling the crucified Christ. Her first solo show, New York gallery 1998, She transformed into a superhero named Raje, appearing in a series of large photographs towering over Times Square; rescuing black stereotyped figures from labels.
In the series Flipping the Script, Cox appropriates European religious masterpieces, Michelangelo's David and The Pieta, with contemporary black figures. in 2001 was Yo Mama's Last Supper. Opened at the Brooklyn Museum,appropriating Leonardo Da Vinci's Last Supper with a nude Cox siting in for Jesus Christ, surrounded black disciples, except Judas who was white.
In 2006, she exhibited Queen Nanny of the Maroons at the Jamaican Biennial. This work was awarded the Aaron Matalon Award.
