Born Sept 20, 1948,NY,NY;Adrian Margaret Smith Piper is an american philosopher, conceptual and performance artist. Recognized for works examining race, gender, class, and identity. A recipient of numerous grants and fellowships for art and philosophy.
Piper studied at the Art Students League of New York in high school. at the School of Visual Arts in New York City she studied sculpture and painting graduating with an associate’s degree 1969. 1974 she received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, City College NY and a Ph.D. in philosophy, 1981 ,Harvard University. 1977–78 she studied at the University of Heidelberg. She pursued an academic and artistic careers and was appointed a tenured professor of philosophy at Wellesley College in Massachusetts,1990.
Her works of art originated in the conceptual art tradition. She began exhibiting her work regularly in 1969 and 1970, in the 1970s Piper began addressing her multiracial background and her gender. Preforming confrontational pieces such as The Mythic Being 1972–81, she was filmed walking streets as a man with a mustache and challenging passers-by to categorize her by race, gender, and class.
In 1970s and ’80s her works on race included Self-Portrait Exaggerating My Negroid Features 81 and Funk Lessons 83. In My Calling (Card) (1986–90), she typed out personal notes to people who had offended her with assumptions.
In 2002 she founded the Adrian Piper Research Archive in Berlin. Piper also founded The Berlin Journal of Philosophy in 2011. She taught at Wellesley College in 2008, her position was discontinued after she refused to return to the US; she believed she was on the U.S. Transportation Security Administration’s traveler watch list.
